Fr Robert Hendrickson
Dear Friends in Christ,
A quote from CS Lewis has been on my mind lately. As I think about how we navigate our days it’s given me much to ponder.
In Mere Christianity, Lewis writes:
“Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance. The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which, a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of. An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may launch an attack otherwise impossible.”
My father once told me that life is lived one decision at a time. That’s where I think we all lose sometimes. We go on autopilot or we take short cuts or we let fear drive our decisions rather than hope.
In all of this we capitulate. We cede some bit of what it means to be human to the forces of the day and pressures of the hour.
What choices can we make this week that will set us up for the next? How can we intentionally live our faith one decision at a time? What spiritual down payment will we make that will grow into a deposit we can’t yet imagine?
I’ll be looking for those chances and choices this week.
Yours in Christ,
—Fr Robert
