Daughters of the King
This is an international lay order of women in the Episcopal, Anglican, Roman Catholic, and ELCA churches. They take a lifetime vow of prayer and service to God and the church.
Saint Philip’s chapter prays for the parish, its clergy and ministry leaders—remembering the living and the departed.
Members meet on the third Sunday of each month in the Chapel of Saint Benedict after the 10:00am service. Visitors are invited.
Contact Cari Evans at evanscari@aol.com.
MONDAYS
The Sowing Circle
This women’s book club meets in person from 11:30am-1:00pm on the second Monday of every month in Saint Anne’s Center. Newcomers are always invited.
This group focuses on sowing new seeds of feminine faith and understanding by reading books written by progressive women authors on faith—and then engaging in conversation about them. The group chooses each month’s book from member suggestions.
Kathleen Hayes is the contact person and you can email her at Hayeskath@verizon.net if you are interested or have questions.
Reading between the lines
This group is led by Saint Philip’s Interim Rector, Richard Mallory, and meets at 5:30pm on Mondays in La Paz.
Reading Between the Lines was created by the late Fr William Dols, an Episcopal priest who brought insights from the Guild for Psychological Studies of San Francisco to bear on Biblical Studies. The study guides for this approach blend Biblical scholarship with depth psychology.
This is an opportunity to stretch your personal awareness while you gain intellectual insights on the scriptures. One of the Lectionary texts for the following Sunday is the focus each week.
Please register online here so you can receive the readings that are emailed on Wednesday for the upcoming Monday session.
Literati Book Club
This co-ed group meets in person at 7:30pm on the 2nd Monday of every month from September through May in Saint Anne’s Center.
In 1991 Saint Philip’s parishioners Maryl Barnes and Wayne Fulton (deceased) founded Literati, a book discussion group. 32 years later, the group is still active. People come and go; new friends are made, old friendships strengthened, and one woman met her husband in the group.
The books are proposed by members and then voted on by the group every spring.
All are invited! Contact parishioner Jen Tellman at jennalyn@arizona.edu for details.
TUESDAYS
Co-Ed Bible Study
This group is facilitated by Deacon Susan Erickson, and meets at 10:00am every Tuesday for 60 minutes via Zoom.
The group chooses a book of the Bible to read through slowly and to discuss; the pace is generally one or two chapters per week.
Typically, a few secondary sources are recommended for those who want to study in more depth, but they’re not required reading. The focus alternates between the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament.
All are invited to participate. If you have questions or would like to join the conversation, contact Dcn Susan Erickson at susanerickson27@gmail.com.
Meet God at the Movies
This group meets at 6:30pm on the third Tuesday of every month via Zoom.
Participants choose a film every month, watch it on their own, and then gather to explore and plumb it for theological content. For example, what is broken/where is sin? Is there a moment of turnaround or repentance? Where is redemption the reign of God visible?
All are invited to join the conversation, but registration is required. You can do that by emailing Mtr Paula Datsko at pauladatsko@gmail.com.
THURSDAYS
Read, Discuss, and Share
This co-ed book group meets 2:00pm-3:30pm on Thursdays in La Paz, and is led by Richard Mallory.
Women’s Bible Study
This group meets at 6:30pm in Saint Anne’s Center on Thursdays.
Participants discuss readings based on a theme, and the conversations are often assisted by a helpful book.
All are invited! If you have questions or would like to participate, contact Camille Salisbury at cbsalisbury@gmail.com.
FRIDAYS
Men’s Group
This group meets at 8:00am on Fridays in La Parroquia. You can attend weekly or sporadically—whatever your schedule allows.
This group offers the men of Saint Philip’s an opportunity to gather for conversations and fellowship while discussing their lives and faith—and how the two inform each other.
Meetings are grounded by a spiritual reading. The facilitators are David Hoag (dhrunwalk@gmail.com) and Bill Symonds (wcsymonds@gmail.com).
SATURDAYS
Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross
This group meets monthly (except in the summer).
These Christian women are committed to prayer, spiritual growth, and are part of a welcoming faith community from all walks of life. Members are young—and older. They are reverent—and sometimes a little irreverent. They are lively. What they all have in common is a commitment to God to support each other through prayer, service, outreach, spiritual growth, fellowship, and simplicity of life.
If you are curious and would like to learn more, contact parishioners Rita Smalling at rjsmalling@gmail.com or Diane Dittemore at dddittem4@gmail.com.
