Deacon Anne Strong

Hello my Sisters and Brothers,

Jesus offered us guidance through His sermon on the mount—Beatitudes…loving enemies, instructions on piety, reminding us not to worry…all leading up to the finale: “Everyone who hears these words of mine AND acts upon them will be wise.” (Matthew 24)

Growth in wisdom is a pillar of Christianity. Wisdom, when sought, eventually moves from head to heart…each moment filled with possibility for growth.

I believe that God puts beauty and revelation in nature to enable us to pause, look around, and be replenished. God is always in hot pursuit of us, nudging us toward what is good and true. We must open our eyes and especially our hearts to receive all the wonder and wisdom gifted.

Wisdom needs to be our priority. Dependence upon self rather than God neglects the means of Grace in the Sacraments and Prayer. Preference for our own needs and customs is a path toward no need of a higher authority.

“Let us make humankind in our own image.”(Genesis 1: 26) What does this mean? There are varying views and I choose the “relationship view.” One which affirms ALL; each and everyone of us is meant to be with each other and God. It is through life giving relationships across differences that human beings witness Christ to one another. We are NOT defined by our occupations or how much money we have.

Questions to ponder: Does the way  I look at people bring the gaze of Christ into the world? Does the way I speak let Christ’s voice be heard? Does my presence build up people?

In a society which urges people to conform and label, judge and condemn those who are different…we in His image need to come alongside those who are excluded. We need to surrender our own agendas and befriend our Sisters and Brothers. This is a win/win… offering them and us a living relationship with God.

Today, may I choose the road that Jesus started, and Martin Luther King and so many brave Spirits followed. I will place my hand in yours and step forward.

A most grateful Amen.

Your Deacon in Christ,

—Anne
