A new book
Some of you may know that in addition to his duties at Saint Philip’s, Fr Matthew is also a Lecturer in Musicology at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. He teaches graduate seminars on topics from Mahler and Wagner to music and liturgy in the West. (Don’t worry, he teaches on Fridays via Zoom and isn’t flying out to Baltimore each week!)
Fr Matthew is excited to report that his first book has just come out through the English press Boydell & Brewer: European Composers on the American Tour, 1900-1914: Richard Strauss, Saint-Saëns, Scriabin, and Coleridge-Taylor. It’s a cultural history of American music at the fin de siècle, through the lens of visiting Europeans.
If you are interested and have a university library card or JSTOR access through an alumni society, you can read it for free online.
Fr Matthew writes: “academic books are expensive, please under no circumstances buy the hardback!”
