How long have you worshiped at Saint Philip’s?
In 1976, my family moved to Tucson from Texas and we immediately began attending Saint Philips. I was in 3rd grade at the time and really enjoyed the holiday services, especially Saint Philip’s Day with its massive May Pole.
In 1994, I was married here, and then later joined right after my twin daughters, Caroline and Libby, turned two years old. That was in 2004.
What makes Saint Philip’s “home” for you?
It’s just always felt “right” to me and the perfect fit. After my high school years, I fell out of going to church.
During the year before we were married here, my husband and I always attended the 7:45am service (which is the service I still attend). But then life got busy, and I sadly didn’t make it back to church much.
After my daughters became toddlers, and I found myself recently divorced, I wanted to get back to church. I walked into the sanctuary and felt right at home. Everything seemed perfect.
That first morning, Tom Lindell introduced himself to me immediately following the service. Any insecurities that I had about being divorced or feeling uncomfortable about being a newly single mom, calmed immediately when he shared his own story. He made me feel right at home and welcome. He was the perfect person to shake my hand!
How have you been involved with the parish?
I first volunteered as a Sunday School Teacher. Over about a ten year span, I taught grades 1 and 2, but mostly grades 4 and 5. For a long time, I was very involved in all youth activities—running pancake dinners, kindness activities, rummage sales, etc.
About 15 years ago, I became a hospital visitor and then a condolence writer (which I still am today).
I have also served on the Vestry. During my tenure, the Vestry hired Fr Robert, Fr Peter, and Mtr Taylor.
I understand you have a favorite tradition. What is it?
My daughters and I love to create the Easter flower cross that stands in front of the Great doors on Easter morning.
Before COVID, families were encouraged to bring flowers to stuff the cross during the Children’s service. COVID changed things and in 2021 Fr Peter asked if the girls and I would create the floral cross. So for the past few years, we arrive around 6:00am and do that so it will be fresh and ready for parishioners when they leave the sunrise service.
What inspires you to volunteer?
Saint Philip’s is truly an important part of my life. From the Daily Bread reflections to the Sunday worship services—all of it helps build my faith every single day. It just feels right to give back to something that gives me so much.
Volunteering has always been a major part of my life. I’ve been very active with Reid Park Zoological Society, Girls Scouts of Southern Arizona, Ben’s Bells, and Tu Nudito.
Were you raised in a faith tradition?
I’m a cradle Episcopalian.
What do you do professionally?
I’m a Managing Partner at Goldberg & Osborne, a personal injury law firm. I’ve been with the firm for over thirty years, but became an owner and partner in 2021.
What do you like about your work?
We get to help people every single day, and make the legal profession accessible to everyone. We take care of folks who can’t afford a lawyer. We fight for people and are willing to litigate large or small cases.
How do you relax when not working?
I’m kind of always working! I love being with my family and my friends. I spend summers in Pinetop, and try to find time to play some golf. I also love Arizona sports and attend as many games as I can.
What’s one of your priorities?
My number one priority has always been my daughters (now college seniors). I won’t miss out on any time that can be spent with them—from having a weekly breakfast to watching college golf matches. Life changes too quickly for me to miss any time with them.
What’s something you’re proud of?
I’m super proud of my girls’ faith life and that they consider the church an important part of their life.
The girls were very involved in the youth group, pilgrimage, and their weekly acolyte duties. Saint Philip’s (and, hopefully I) did something right when they were growing up, because their love for the church as a whole and Saint Philip’s in particular stuck. Libby will even get married at Saint Philip’s this June.
What’s something you’re passionate about?
The holidays! I’m actually a bit of a freak about almost every holiday. I love to decorate the house for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day. You name it, I’m all in. I love to host and have parties around the holidays—fun dinner parties to large cocktail parties.
What’s something you find challenging?
Saying no, because I tend to overcommit myself. As I get older, I am more inspired to say yes to only those things that truly bring me joy.
What’s one of your super powers?
This is a really hard question as I’ve never thought about having a super power. I usually just find a task that needs to be done, and then do it.
But if I had to choose one, I’d say that I am always open to the Spirit—and not afraid to listen to it. It sometimes feels outlandish to do something based just on a thought or instinct, but I know this is the way that God speaks to me. In my experience, following these instincts helps me stay true to myself and to God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
What’s one of your core values?
Without a doubt, positivity. I can take any set of facts and turn it into a positive.
What’s one of your guiding principles?
I try to live out my faith in all that I do, be kind, loving, take care of others, and make no judgments.
What’s something you’re grateful for?
I am extremely grateful to know God and to have a faith life. I can’t express in words how important He is to me.
Next, I’m grateful for my girls, family, and friends. And, obviously, this parish. I feel lucky that 20 years ago, I came back to Saint Philip’s and it has led me to where I am. All in all, I would be a different person if I didn’t have this special community.
Have you done something new recently?
This past year has been the first time in my life that I have lived alone and not been in a relationship. I have found that I can do it and be totally okay. I’m very happy being with myself and in my own skin.
What’s something on your bucket list?
I would really like to walk the Camino de Santiago with my daughters.
What might people be surprised to learn about you?
That I have little attention for detail. It’s easy to assume that a lawyer would be super detail oriented. I can be, but I can also get a lot of things done quickly. They might not be perfect, but everything gets completed.
What’s a fun fact about you?
Close to my birth, my grandparents traveled in Israel, and brought home water from the Jordan River. I was baptized with that water!
