“The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that ‘neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord’ [Romans 8:38]” (Book of Common Prayer [BCP], 507).

In the burial liturgy, we console those who mourn, pray for the dead, and commend their souls to God. Planning these services with families is both a solemn duty and great privilege for clergy here.

If a death is imminent, please call the Pastoral CareLine (520-971-3551) as soon as possible so that a priest or deacon can come to administer Last Rites. If you need to plan a funeral, please contact Fr Matthew Reese (matthew.reese@stphilipstucson.org) to set up a meeting.

Please note that funerals on church grounds must conform to the liturgy and Canons of The Episcopal Church. Saint Philip’s cannot rent the sanctuary or other church reception rooms for secular funerals. Funerals must also be officiated by Saint Philip’s clergy or another Episcopal priest or deacon in good standing, with approval of the Rector. Ministers of other Christian denominations may be invited to preach or assist in consultation with the parish clergy.
