”As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”

Dear friends in Christ,

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Almighty God became a powerless baby. He took on our humanity in all its finitude and vulnerability and particularity. He was born a poor Jewish boy in occupied Palestine. He lived his life under the same social structures as those around him.

But he didn’t leave these things the way he found them.

In Christ, the things that the world says are important are rendered meaningless, and things that the world sees as worthless are understood to be of utmost value. The social categories we use to make meaning of our lives and our relationships become meaningless for those who are reborn in Christ.

I preached yesterday morning about the story of Mary’s virgin birth as the story of God turning the world and its rules upside down - and the story didn’t stop there. God is still turning the things we think we know upside down. This Christmas Eve, as we prepare to celebrate again the arrival of the Messiah, look for where God might be looking to turn your life upside down too.

In peace,
Mtr. Kelli
