Dear Friends,

An intriguing passage in 1 Samuel 8 today tells the story of Israel seeking a king. Until this point Judges were divinely chosen to lead the people as the Lord’s representatives.

Samuel wisely advises them that a king will take from them fields and crops, wine and grain, sons to serve in the army and daughters to serve the king. But they foolishly wanted to be like other nations and were determined to have a king.

In doing so they rejected the Lord, sacrificing invisible divine guidance for the pomp and circumstance of a king.

It is a reminder, I think, that we also have a choice.

We owe allegiance to this country and the principles which established it at its founding, but our primary allegiance is to another voice. In our generation the voice of the Lord is often drowned out by voices determined to cause us grief.

Listening with ears of the heart and following where we are led is most important as we make our way in this journey on the King’s Highway.

Faithfully,

—Chotard
