Kenya clergy support

By The Rt Rev’d Jennifer A. Reddall, sixth bishop of Arizona

Most of you are aware that I formed a friendship with a Kenyan bishop, John Oringa, at the Lambeth Conference last summer. In our conversations, he indicated that his clergy in this missionary diocese are often not paid due to lack of funds, and having put out the call to the Diocese of Arizona, many have contributed to ensuring that the clergy of Kisii are paid this year.

I invite those who have not yet made a contribution to do so here.  When donating please select “Kenya Clergy Support” from the drop-down menu.

So far we have sent enough funds for about 10 clergy salaries for a full year; there are 15 clergy serving in Kisii. The remaining cost of the salaries is about $10,000.

Beyond financial support, a small group of representatives from the Diocese of Arizona is going to make an initial pilgrimage to Kisii this summer.  There are still a few spaces open on our trip, and I wish to invite those who have an interest in exploring Anglicanism in a very different context from Arizona to consider joining us. The primary goal of this first trip is relationship building.

We will be in Kenya from July 5 through 12; and our days will hopefully include the enthronement of Bishop John by the Archbishop of Kenya, as Kisii has become a full diocese as of January 1. We will be visiting the congregations and ministries of the Diocese, and hopefully, by the time we return, I will have a better sense of what shared ministry God is calling us to engage in. The final afternoon and morning of our trip will be at the Masai Mara wildlife park, seeing the wildebeest migration and other animals on safari.

The cost of the pilgrimage, excluding airfare, is $1,500.00 per person for single occupancy, and $1,200.00 per person for double occupancy. That includes breakfast and dinner each day. Pilgrims are responsible for their own costs, including airfare, travel insurance, visa expenses, and additional meals.

Those going on the pilgrimage should make flight arrangements to arrive in Nairobi by 1:00pm on Wednesday, July 5, and depart in the later afternoon or evening on July 12.

A 50% deposit is required by Wednesday, March 15 to go on the trip. Click the button below to register and if you have any questions, email Serrena Fuentes at serrena@azdiocese.org.
