Advent: A new perspective

Led by Shirin McArthur, two-dozen participants from across the country engaged in an Advent retreat last Saturday, December 5.

The event explored imaginative first-person stories from the perspectives of Mary and Joseph when they learned about Mary’s divine pregnancy. Shirin provided questions that prompted reflection and discussion, and allowed time, as well, for periods of silent prayer.

Feedback from one participant included,

I appreciated Shirin’s approach. She invited us to use our imaginations, as well as our intellect. Her “informed speculation” in imagining what Mary and Joseph each went through was brilliant.

Putting myself in Mary and Joseph’s shoes helped enlarge the Advent experience for me. Waiting with them for the birth of their divine child long ago adds helpful perspective to my own Advent waiting this year.

Shirin has led Advent and Lenten retreat days for Saint Philip’s since 2018. What 2021 will bring is unknown but she hopes to continue offering such opportunities in the year ahead.
