Congratulations!

Over the past five years, Saint Philips parishioner Richard Powell has worked on three books, all of which are being published this year. Two of the books focus on physics: one is a textbook for STEM students, while the other explores the physics underlying different problems in society.

The third book, written for a general audience, may be of particular interest to Saint Philip’s parishioners. Seven Saints of Science was co-authored by Richard and his son, Doug Powell. Doug holds a master’s degree in Christian apologetics and is currently pursuing a doctorate in theology. He previously gave a presentation at Saint Philip’s on the Shroud of Turin.

The book explores the conflict between science and religion through the biographies of seven of the greatest scientists who ever lived. It spans the scientific era from the Enlightenment to today’s high-tech age. This is an ideal topic for a physicist and an apologist to address together, and it should appeal to anyone interested in the ongoing debate over science and religion—from Galileo to Dawkins.

Dick had a 45-year career as a physicist working in government labs and universities. He retired as the University of Arizona’s Vice President of Research, Graduate Education, and Economic Development. You can read more about him in his “In conversation” interview here.

The book is published by Jenny Stanford and distributed by Taylor & Francis. It can be purchased at local bookstores or on-line from the publisher or from Amazon.
