Commission report
The Creation Care Commission at Saint Philip’s has developed new goals for enhancing the church campus. These initiatives are designed to improve the physical environment and represent an active commitment to the preservation and flourishing of the local ecosystem.
Water Conservation
Volunteers are working to reduce water waste, expenses, and property damage by creating retention basins in garden areas. This will make it possible to take advantage of what nature provides and divert water to flow away from buildings.
Ecosystem Support
Volunteers are supporting the desert ecosystem by providing nest boxes for pollinators and predators (eliminating species poisoning from pesticides and rodenticides) and planting native flora that naturally provide food and shelter. These measures also contribute to the larger Tucson community by mitigating the loss of natural habitat to roads and housing.
Waste Management
Volunteers help remedy human generated waste by providing a recycling station on campus. It’s located adjacent to the Murphy Gallery’s east side entrance.
Youth Engagement
Volunteers engage our church youth in environmental education by designing projects, such as nesting boxes, that they can create for animal use and nature observation on campus.
Through these projects, the hope is to create a more sustainable, vibrant, and beautiful home for the congregation and the community—one that reflects devotion to the Earth and all its inhabitants.
