Dear siblings in Christ,

One of today’s lectionary readings is Lamentations 3: 26-36. I particularly resonated with the first part (vs. 26-28) which says, “It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for one to bear the yoke in youth, to sit alone in silence….”

I don’t know about you, but my life is full of to-do lists, emails, texts, occasional phone calls, routines and schedules. Waiting quietly, and sitting alone in silence are not my norm. And yet, in reading the verses from Lamentations, this seems rather desirable to me.

So, how do I get there from here? I think the answer may be found in routine. When might I find a moment or two to “wait quietly,” and “sit alone in silence?” Perhaps over that first cup of coffee (or whatever you prefer) in the morning, before things get moving along. They say anything we do for seven days becomes habit. (Or is it fourteen days?)

As we are about to turn the page on yet another calendar, and welcome in a new year, perhaps now is the time to look for and create some quiet time to be alone with Father, Son, Holy Spirit God.

In Christ,

—John
