I can see clearly now, the rain is gone  …*

Dear friend,

I’ve never been blind—except in the way we all are at times. Even so, I have an eye condition that may ultimately render me blind. But the threat of blindness is still not the same as being blind—except in the way we all are at times.

I can see all obstacles in my way  …

In today’s Daily Office Gospel from Mark, we encounter once again blind Bartimaeus, begging by the roadside as Jesus and his entourage are leaving Jericho. Determined to reach Jesus, Bartimaeus risks causing a stir.

“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. Bartimaeus said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind  …

Sight, both as metaphor and as one of the senses, is important to human life.

People who cannot see for some physical reason often adapt to their environments in ways the sighted cannot imagine. I’ve heard it said they may have a keener understanding of their world than those who have sight.

Those who will not see, even if staring straight at a truth, suffer a blindness that may actually be more limiting.

In any event, it seems Bartimaeus is on to something. Calling out for Jesus’ help in any difficulty seems a right thing to do,  even at the risk of creating a stir.

It’s gonna be a bright, bright, bright sunshiny day  …
