Dear Friends in Christ,

One of our readings for today is Luke 10: 38-42, where Jesus has been welcomed into the home of Martha and Mary.

This passage closes with, “But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing.  Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’” —Luke 10: 40-42

The line that speaks to me is “…you are worried and distracted by many things.”

I think of the distractions of modern life: texts, FaceBook, Instagram, television, the news, emails, etc. When we get sucked into these things, we have not chosen the better part, which is focusing on God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This made me look for the Psalm that says, “Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; give me life in your ways” (Ps. 119: 37).

And so I pray: Heavenly Father, open my eyes that I may see the distractions in my life. Give me the awareness to discern where and when to give my time, and energy to these distractions, and where and when to turn my thoughts back to you. In Jesus name, Amen.

In Christ,

—John
