1 Cor 3:11: For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ.

Dear Friends in Christ,

I always look forward to Lent as a time to work on the foundation of my faith. Lent is a gift from the church, a reminder that we were created from dust and to dust we shall return.

That means we only have a life span of “70 years, or perhaps in strength even 80,” as Psalm 90 reminds us. Since I consider this life to be a preparation for the promised life to come, then I need to get on with it!

So Lent is the occasion for considering how much I have changed since last Lent. What have I learned? Where am I going? What else should I be considering as I begin this Lenten season?

This period gives me the incentive to think carefully about my prayer life, my daily actions, my hopes and fears. How else can I prepare for the gift of Easter, and beyond that to the time I come face to face with God?

Sobering? Yes. Exhilarating? Yes! Challenging? You bet!

Thank you, Church, for the gift of Lent.

Faithfully,

—Chotard
