Dear Friend,

A few pieces of scripture have become subtle prayers for me over the past few years, and Psalm 19:1 is one of them. I exclaim in my heart along with the Psalmist, "the heavens declare the glory of God!" when I see a particularly beautiful sunset. "The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it" when I am trying to see the big picture. "I lift my eyes unto the hills, from where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth," when I am driving or hiking toward one of Tucson's mountain ranges. Most of the time these prayers utter themselves and I take a pause, to give the quiet kind of praise to God that I hope will punctuate and permeate my day. Silence, listening, stillness. Sometimes I jump to the next thing. The thing about Psalm 19:1 is that it applies all the time, when there is a beautiful sunset, when there is a raging storm, when what's next in the weather or life is unsure. God's glory is ever near and even the earth proclaims it!

Try memorizing a few verses of Psalms that can become prayers that are in your bones. I would love to hear about the prayers that have shaped your life, and how God shows up in moments that these prayers spring to mind, where the prayers and God's presence are as close as your breath.

In Christ,

Psalm 19
1The heavens declare the glory of God, *
and the firmament shows his handiwork.
2One day tells its tale to another, *
and one night imparts knowledge to another.
3Although they have no words or language, *
and their voices are not heard,
4Their sound has gone out into all lands, *
and their message to the ends of the world.
