Dear Friend,

Our Psalm for this morning contains so many of the common elements of prayer: petition, lament, praise, thanksgiving. This Psalm also seems to possess a sense of knowledge of how and who God is in the midst of the trials, physical and social, as the Psalmist experiences.

We hear the transfixing line in the 5th verse, the first of which are the last words that Jesus says on the Cross (Luke 23:46):
Into your hands I commend my spirit, *
for you have redeemed me,
O Lord, O God of truth.

We hear the comforting:
Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold; *
for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

And the trusting:
Make your face to shine upon your servant, *
and in your loving-kindness save me.

None of these seem to be said lightly, they are all prayed in the context of suffering. And yet they are prayed with a deep sense of trust in God that buoys the sufferer, and leads them in ways of mercy and comfort. May this Psalmist's trust lend you strength this day.

In Christ,
