Dear Friend,

This morning's Gospel reading is Luke's telling of the Transfiguration. When we come upon the miraculous in scripture there are different ways to approach, perhaps there's awe and wondering-prostration even as is depicted in icons of this scene, perhaps there's wondering in the direction of skepticism, perhaps there's a move to prayer or a memory of the miraculous closer at hand. Whenever I read about the Transfiguration and the collapsing of time, space, divinity and humanity, history and now that it represents I tend to turn to poetry so that I can linger with Jesus and his companions on the mountain for a little longer.

For that one moment, ‘in and out of time’,
On that one mountain where all moments meet,
The daily veil that covers the sublime
In darkling glass fell dazzled at his feet.
There were no angels full of eyes and wings
Just living glory full of truth and grace.
The Love that dances at the heart of things
Shone out upon us from a human face
And to that light the light in us leaped up,
We felt it quicken somewhere deep within,
A sudden blaze of long-extinguished hope
Trembled and tingled through the tender skin.
Nor can this blackened sky, this darkened scar
Eclipse that glimpse of how things really are.
(Transfiguration, Malcolm Guite)

Whether today is a mountain-top moment or time spent in the valley I pray that the miraculous nature of God-with-us is present to you!

In Christ,
Mtr Taylor
