Shroud of Turin

Doug Powell

Saint Philip’s will welcome apologist and author, Doug Powell, on Saturday, March 18. He will host the presentation, “An Encounter with the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo” from 1:00pm-3:00pm in the Murphey Gallery.

Mr. Powell’s presentation will feature an exact replica of the Shroud of Turin and discuss evidence for and against the original’s authenticity.

This artifact has captivated the imagination of Christians since appearing in Europe in the 1300s. The mysterious image of the man on the cloth has defied explanation despite scientific examination. Controversy surrounds the radiocarbon test that dated the cloth to the Middle Ages. As a result, the Shroud is off-limits to further testing.

But according to John 20:7 there were two cloths in the tomb. The other was the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. Does the cathedral in Oviedo, Spain have that cloth? Is there any evidence connecting it with the Shroud of Turin? If so, what implications does the Sudarium have for the authenticity of the Shroud? This presentation will not provide any answers but it will present the details of the questions—and explain why they are controversial.

Powell received a Master’s degree in Christian apologetics and is the author of several books on the Christian faith, including the best selling Christian Apologetics. He has also recently written a series of adventure novels dealing with Biblical archeology. Powell is a popular speaker in church venues throughout the southeastern United States.
