Treasures—old and new

December’s exhibit will open this Sunday, December 3, and feature items that are part of Saint Philip’s extensive art collection. All are invited to the opening reception from 12:15pm-2:00pm.

One of Saint Philip’s great assets is its extensive art collection. It was started by Father Ferguson who accomplished a great coup in arranging for the parish to receive important works of art from the celebrated Kress Collection. Saint Philip’s was the only church to acquire this collection of great quality and visual diversity.

Saint Philip’s Sacred Arts Committee curated this show to display parts of the collection that are rarely seen or overlooked. Said another way, the items in this exhibit are works of art that are often hidden in plain view.

Don’t miss this wonderful chance to discover some of Saint Philip’s treasurers. For example, do you know that the Carlotta Crucifix was a papal gift to the Empress of Mexico?

December’s show was created to show the beauty of the collection and also to underscore the need to protect, preserve, and conserve this wonderful collection.

A third focus of the exhibit is to highlight that the collection is a living one—it is always growing and developing with new works of art. To that end, the show will include a series of paintings by parishioner and artist Jeanine Colini. She designed her series for Christmas Eve and you’ll see it in the Christmas Eve bulletin.
