Meet God at the Movies

Meet God at the Movies will discuss The Color Purple for its exploration at 6:30pm on Monday, March 20.

In April, the group will meet at 6:30pm on Monday, April 10*, and discuss the movie Philomena.

The Color Purple premiered on December 18, 1985 and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. The movie is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It depicts a black Southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father and others over four decades.

The Saint Philip’s movie discussion group gathers every month via Zoom to explore a film and plumb it for theological content in the areas of creation (what is the world of the story like); what is broken/where is sin; is there a moment of turnaround, repentance; and where is redemption or the reign of God visible.

All are welcome to join the discussions, but registration is required. You can register here.

The Color Purple can be streamed through Prime Video, Apple TV, HBO Max, Vudu, Redbox, or truTV.

*Future date
Meet God at the Movies usually meets on the third Monday of every month but in April it will meet on Monday, April 10, to avoid conflict with the Rising Stars concert series. (See related story titled, “Concert and Dessert.”)
