Ginny Mead
Virginia “Ginny” Mead passed away in her home on April 18, 2022 in Oro Valley, surrounded by her family.
All are welcome to attend the memorial service that will be held at Saint Philip's in the Hills at 10:30am on Thursday, May 12. A reception will follow in the Murphey Gallery.
Ginny was born August 21, 1954, in Warren, Pennsylvania to Helen and James Potter. She studied mathematics and participated in the music program at Indiana University, where she graduated with a BS in 1975 and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa. She also earned an MBA from the University of Illinois in 1978.
While at a geology field course in the summer before freshman year at UI, Ginny met John, and the two were later married on August 11, 1979. She felt raising her children, Chris and Carolyn, was the best thing she ever did. When they were young, she’d take them to amusement parks and ride every roller coaster—despite her own fear of heights. That same spirit of support and of placing others first manifested in many ways throughout their lives.
Wherever she lived, Ginny was an active member of her church where she added her strong, clear voice to the choir. She had a great love of music which she fostered in her children. She was a gracious host and a thoughtful correspondent who never missed an opportunity for a birthday card or thank you note.
Ginny will be remembered as a woman of poise, kind humor, and commendable thrift and generosity. She built a warm and inviting home and loved nothing more than to have her family all together under her roof.
She is survived by her husband John; brothers Tom and Bill Potter; her children and their spouses Chris (Cherise) and Carolyn (Benjamin); grandson Calvin; and many loving members of her extended family.
During her illness, Ginny learned about the enormous need for research and investment in cancer screening and treatment for Native Americans. In lieu of flowers, the family invites that donations be made in Ginny’s honor to the University of Arizona Cancer Center to support these services.
