The Isenheim Altarpiece

Much of Saint Philip’s programming and formation for the 2022-2023 program year is built around the themes of creation care and environmental stewardship.

During the four weeks of Advent, Dr Kevin Justus* is studying four altar pieces (one each Sunday) and examining them for the Divine and the artist’s pursuit to capture the perfect image of God.

At 10:15am this Sunday, December 4, join Kevin as he considers “the sorrow of joy and the ecstasy of pain,” i.e., the manifestation of divine empathy and understanding. The art this Sunday will be Matthias Grünewald’s, The Isenheim Altarpiece (below).

*Dr Justus wears many hats: musician, arranger, writer, musicologist and art historian. You can read about Kevin by clicking here.
