Vestry update

The Vestry is a group of elected volunteers that serves as the parish’s functional Board of Directors. Vestry members, who serve in three groups for three-year terms, provide leadership and oversight of the mission and ministry of the congregation, and manage the church buildings and property, finances, and personnel. Saint Philip’s Vestry gathers for a hybrid meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Below are highlights from the meeting that took place on Wednesday, September 20.

Present: Michael Anderson, John Bremond, Herb Burton, Erika Johnson, Bill Kuhllman, Meredith Mullins, Madison Owen, Roger Rainbolt, Tamzin Sugiyama, Kristin Tovar, Bonnie Winn, Fr Robert Hendrickson, and Mtr Mary Trainor

Absent: Barbara Cone

Guests:  Susan Erickson, Angelina Hannum, and John Waszczak

The Vestry meeting opened with a prayer, led by Senior Warden John Bremond, followed by Bible Study.  

Commission Reports
Susan Erickson reported for Outreach; Roger Rainbolt for Music; Angie Hannum for Children, Youth, and Families Ministry; and, Erika Johnson for Creation Care.  

Senior Warden’s Report
John Bremond thanked Tamzin Sugiyama for accepting the role of Vestry Nominating Chair. Among other things, John stated that a recent quarterly review of the strategic plan showed good progress.

Rector’s Report
Fr Robert asked Vestry members to read the book “Signs of Life” before the November meeting as a lead-in to a church wide Renewal Works survey. He also announced that Saint Philip’s will host the 2024 Diocesan Convention. A team is being formed to begin planning for that event.

Sunday service attendance is rebounding after COVID with numbers approaching pre-COVID levels.   

Mtr Mary reported on the church security plan which has been discussed for several years and is now being visibly implemented in the children’s wing. Saint Philip’s is adapting advice received from the Pima County Sheriff’s department, as well as other security experts.    

Treasurer’s Report
Herb Burton announced that the fundraising campaign, “Close the Gap” has received $120,000.00 and at least $40,000.00 more is pledged.
