One last week

If you haven’t visited Saint Philip’s November photography show then plan to see it before it comes down on Friday, December 2.

The photographs showcase works by Robert Fitzgerald and Saint Philip’s parishioner and staff member Ayden Carrell.

Robert Fitzgerald began photographing at a young age, primarily in black and white. Artists Edward Weston and Minor White strongly influenced his work.

Bob worked with filmmaker Robert Snyder as editor and cinematographer, and shot portraits of Buckminster Fuller, Henry Miller, Anais Nin, Ruth Asawa, and others. Most of his career was in film as a supervising sound editor on films such as Dances with Wolves, Ronin, and Barfly.

Now retired in Tucson, Bob has returned to his early love of photography—this time with an emphasis on color and painterly impressionism. He achieves his results by taking a photo with his camera and then tweaking it with his computer to approximate the look of an oil painting.

Ayden Carrell fell in love with photography by accident. In 2017, he was trying to photograph a vermillion flycatcher. He was pleased with the initial images and it sparked an interest to further his education.

Shadows and reflections are hallmarks of Ayden’s photographs. These foci underscore that photography has become a contemplative practice for him. Knowing that, it may not be a surprise to learn that the majority of Ayden’s photographs are taken on Saint Philip’s campus. What might be unexpected is that Ayden uses an iPhone to capture all his photographs.

A portion of all sales will be donated to Saint Philip’s Church. If you have questions, contact parishioner Sue Cross at karakasue@gmail.com.
