Make a difference

Saint Philip’s volunteers have returned to Rio Vista School (on Limberlost near the Trader Joe’s on Campbell) to work with youngsters during their after-school period. A teacher is present during the period and volunteers’ activities range from helping kindergartners and 1st graders with beginning reading skills to assisting 3rd graders with their homework.

One volunteer says the school has a strong family feeling because the parents are so involved. She describes the teachers as inspired and cited a teacher, Sean Taylor, who recently introduced reading, math, and science topics to the children by preparing cupcakes with them. He made the lesson fun and interesting and everyone enjoyed the sweet treat!

(Mr. Taylor was the October 2019 Teacher Excellence Award winner.)

Saint Philip’s partnership with Rio Vista is more than 10 years old and it is a gift to work with these engaged neighbors and students.

After passing a background check, volunteers visit the school once a week for two hours. Saint Philip’s staff contact is Mtr Taylor. If you’re interested in learning more or signing up, please email Mtr Taylor (taylor.devine@stphilipstucson.org).
