MLK Day: 'The Butler'

Meet God at the Movies will discuss The Butler at 6:30pm Monday, January 18. The film was chosen intentionally because that is also the date of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and follows a weekend of anti-racism sessions at Saint Philip’s (see related article.)

With a star-studded cast, The Butler is a dramatization of the true story of Cecil Gaines (portrayed by Forest Whitaker), who served eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House. The civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society. More information on the movie here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Butler

Meet God at the Movies is a ministry of Saint Philip’s through which participants watch movies (on their own) and come together on the third Monday of each month for a general review and then to go deeper, looking to identify how the films handle certain theological themes (creation, sin, repentance, and redemption.)

In December, the group discussed Joyeux Noel, a dramatization of a real occurrence, a self-enacted Christmas truce among fighting forces on the front in World War I. For the first half-hour, we reported our general impressions of the film, and in the second of the session, we looked for what was the underlying world of the film; where did we see sin or brokenness of any kind; was there anywhere someone in the plot recognized a need for a new start; and, finally, where was there hope, redemption, reconciliation.

It all makes for an enjoyable time among movie-loving friends.
