'The Butler'

Meet God at the Movies will discuss The Butler at 6:30pm Monday, January 18. The film was chosen intentionally because that is also the date of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and follows a weekend of anti-racism sessions at Saint Philip’s.

With a star-studded cast, The Butler is a dramatization of the true story of Cecil Gaines (portrayed by Forest Whitaker), who served eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House. The civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man's life, family, and American society. More information on the movie here.

Meet God at the Movies is a ministry of Saint Philip’s through which participants watch movies (on their own) and come together on the third Monday of each month for a general review and then to go deeper, looking to identify how the films handle certain theological themes (creation, sin, repentance, and redemption.)

In December, the group discussed Joyeux Noel, a dramatization of a real occurrence, a self-enacted Christmas truce among fighting forces on the front in World War I. For the first half-hour, we reported our general impressions of the film, and in the second half of the session, we looked for what is the underlying world of the film; where do we see sin or brokenness of any kind; is there anywhere someone in the plot recognizes a need for a new start; and, finally, where is there hope, redemption, reconciliation.

It all makes for an enjoyable time among movie-loving friends.
