The Great O Antiphons

If you’re familiar with the hymn “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” you’re also more familiar with the Great O Antiphons than you may suppose. With these antiphons, the Church embarks on a mini-season of deepened contemplation called Sapientiatide (Wisdom-tide), named after the first of the antiphons: O Sapientia/O Wisdom.

Where do the antiphons come from? How many are there? What makes them so great? How can we pray them and allow their spiritual ferment to quicken, warm, and enlighten our souls this midwinter? What other mysteries might they hold for us?  And what’s an antiphon anyway?
