Jesus, take the wheel…I’m running low on faith and gasoline…*

Dear friend,

Stepping away a winner of American Idol in 2005, Carrie Underwood was about to take the music world by storm.

Award after award. Here’s a very small selection: Billboard Music Awards—2005: Country Single Sales Artist of the Year; 2005: Country Single of the Year (“Inside Your Heaven”); 2005: Country Albums Artist of the Year; 2005: Country Album of the Year (“Some Hearts”); 2007: Top Selling Country Song (“Before He Cheats”); 2012: Top Christian Song (“Something in the Water”)

Her crossover song Jesus,Take The Wheel, secured her a place in multi-genre music stardom. The woman the lyrics describe has lost control of her life and, in desperation, hands it over to Jesus.

In today’s Collect for Proper 6, we pray these words, “Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in your steadfast faith and love…”

I must confess, I find Jesus, Take the Wheel, good advice for any day. Low on faith or gasoline. Or even if things seem under control. How could I go wrong with focus on the faith and love of Jesus as my guiding principle.

Maybe you figured out I am a fan of Carrie Underwood. She has a great voice. She sings songs I like. That’s enough to make the case. But it’s her unapologetic Christian proclamation that most earns her my favor.
