All Saints', All Souls'

On Sunday and Monday, Saint Philip’s will observe two of the major liturgies of the church year. On Sunday, November 1, we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints’, complete with a baptism; and on Monday, November 2, we will mark the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed, or, All Souls’ Day. Here are the details:

All Saints’ Day

10:00am Sunday, November 1: The Feast of All Saints’ is a festive day when the Church commemorates all the saints of God, known and unknown, from the days of Adam and Eve until the end of the world, who have gone before us in faith and attained the bliss of heaven and shown forth in their lives the perfection of devotion.

All Saints’ is one of several days in the Church’s annual calendar that is traditionally reserved for the celebration of the sacrament of Holy Baptism. In keeping with this ancient custom, we are beyond excited to baptize a young infant as a part of our Sunday liturgy and welcome her into the household and family of God.

To mark the occasion, we’ll replace our usual service of Morning Prayer with a Baptismal Liturgy of the Word. The Liturgy of the Word is the first portion of the Eucharistic rite with which we are well familiar. It begins with the Opening Acclamation, “Blessed be God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,” and concludes with the passing of the Peace.

We hope you will join us for this momentous celebration!

All Souls’ Day

5:00pm Monday, November 2, a solemn requiem mass will be live-streamed from the Chapel of the Nativity. We commend this service especially to those whose loved ones have died since November 2019.

As a way of remembering the departed, we will begin the All Souls’ requiem with a reading of the parish necrology. Ministers will light votive candles on behalf of the congregation, in honor of their loved ones. We will conclude the service with prayers at the ofrenda located in the garden portico just outside the doors to the Chapel.

You may submit the names of those for whom you desire prayers by emailing Fr. Peter Helman, Parochial Vicar. MARY: CHECK THURSDAY MORNING IF PETER CAN STILL TAKE NAMES.

Please visit the church and place your memento mori on the ofrenda. Such items may include keepsakes and photographs, among other things that remind of us our loved ones. Please follow the signs located on the steps of the Great Doors.

The ofrenda will remain in place for at least a week after November 2 in order that you may reclaim your items.
