Saint Nicholas Choir ‘homework’

As choral activities have moved online this fall, our Saint Nicholas choristers have been using online resources as a component of their training. I thought it would give you an interesting view into their work to see the list of video resources I provide for them. These aren’t exactly ‘homework’, but rather invitations to learn about music from ensembles and churches who are posting their work to YouTube.

Last week, the kids heard a recording of a Bach cello suite, so this week they are learning about the differences between the modern and Baroque cello, and about the small sibling of the cello, the Violincello da Spalla, for which Bach’s suites were initially written. To remind them of the choir culture that exists in England, we are looking at materials from the Saint Paul’s Cathedral Choir in London, as well as an introduction to the Willis organ there.

All of this is an effort to create a musical environment for the kids, and to show how their work is part of a larger tradition. Enjoy these videos, and you will learn something too!
