Habitat for Humanity Tucson is one of Saint Philip’s partner non-profits. Through Beloved in the Desert, Madison Owen serves that agency as Volunteer Resources Assistant. You may know Madison from choir at Saint Philip’s! There are several opportunities to serve coming up as the weather cools off. Social distancing best practices will be observed.

1. A Brush with Kindness event held on Friday, November 6, from 6:45am-1:00pm for up to 12 participants ages 14 years and older. Project is in the 85719 ZIP code. The address will be sent to those who sign up.

Help is needed for Mrs. Neckowitz to do some general landscaping: tree trimming, bush trimming, weed removal. At 70, Mrs. Neckowitz lives alone in her house, but converted an old garage/workshop into a guest house that she rents out as a source of income. The home was built in 1934 and she has lived there since 1984. The interior of her home has been remodeled throughout the years and is in good repair.

Mrs. Neckowitz has some trees, bushes, and cacti in her yard that need some trimming. She is unable to complete the work herself due to age and low income, and has reached out to Habitat for assistance.

If you are interested in assisting with this project please sign up using this link. Not sure what A Brush with Kindness Program is, click here to read more!

2. Carters Court Construction Site is open Monday-Thursday 6:30am-12:30pm and most Saturdays for a maximum of 30 people. We are also encouraging groups of 10-15 to come out and help build! Want to sign up? Please use this link to sign up for a fun build day! Want to set up a group? Please email Gina directly at ginah@habitattucson.org.

3. Our wonderful HabiStore is looking for more participants to join in the fun! Open Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00am-4:00pm with three shifts available, we are looking for folks interested in helping as a cashier, customer service, merchandising/inventory, donation/warehouse assistance and admin! Email our Volunteer Assistant, Madison to get started!

Learn more about Madison and her time with Habitat:

Madison is from the East Coast, where she has called the midlands of South Carolina and, most recently, the mountains of Western North Carolina home. In May of 2020, she received her B.S./B.Ed. in Music Education from Western Carolina University. Madison plays many instruments, but primarily studied the euphonium and also loves to sing. She is incredibly thankful for her growing up in the Episcopal Church. It was there where she was able to know and see the love of Christ and the Holy Spirit moving in the world through actions of social justice and environmental stewardship.

Madison is excited to partner with Habitat For Humanity Tucson through the Beloved in the Desert, Episcopal Service Corps Program, particularly because she was drawn to Habitat’s mission to build decent and sustainable homes that EVERYONE deserves. She is excited to venture into the desert for this next bit of her life spent leaning into the Christian faith and living more justly. In her free time, you can find her wandering around hiking trails, learning how to garden in the Arizona sun, reading a book, or creating or listening to music with her friends.
