Parish Library Announces New Acquistions

The Renouf-Nelson library is happy to announce that the fall 2017 new acquisitions are now all catalogued & on the shelves. The library was fortunate to be able to acquire 90 new items for late 2017. The full list is available below (and in printed form on the front credenza in the library).

Our cataloguing system shows that over the past 5 years, books are checked out at an average volume 2–2.5x greater than DVDs. However, as far as single-item popularity, our most-borrowed materials, by far, are DVDs. In a recent report, they accounted for 19 of the top 22 items; 25 of the top 30; and 28 of the top 35.

In spite of this, our collection has tended to tilt far in the direction of books – until now, 160 shelves of books vs. 4 shelves of DVDs (40 times more books than DVDs). Past buying has also heavily favored books – for example, 160 books vs. 2 DVDs in 2016. For our fall 2017 acquisition list, we wanted to address this demand/imbalance by investing in 70 new DVDs (and 21 books).

These visual media focus on a diverse array of documentaries, biographies & biopics of church figures, teaching series, dramatizations, favorite religious classics, and a few fun titles. In the future, we plan to focus on acquiring more of the Great Courses, which have always been very popular in our library.

And as always, you will find some great books on our new items list as well! The individual items can be found by browsing the new book displays, or searching for them on the shelves.
