The Saint John's Bible Presentation: "The Artist as Preacher"

We are so accustomed to hearing the Bible explained from the pulpit that we overlook the profound insights into the sacred page that artists offer to us. This presentation will open with a brief overview of how calligraphers in ancient and medieval Bibles presented the text in ways that communicated larger themes and interpretations to readers of their time. Then the focus will shift to The Saint John's Bible and examine how a group of modern calligraphers and illuminators have built upon the tradition of the ancients and how they have tried to make the Word of God come alive on a page.
