Opera Night: A Benefit for the 2019 UK Residency

How fortunate Saint Philip’s is to have wonderful staff singers who are also superb, experienced opera singers.  Our singers will be featured in Opera Night, on Friday, April 13th at 7:00pm - a benefit for the Saint Nicholas Choir’s second UK Residency scheduled for July 2019 at Ely Cathedral.  The gala evening begins with “Operatifs” at 6:30pm in the Gallery and moves to the church for Act 1 at 7:30pm. Following the performance return to the Gallery for a lavish dessert finale.

Performers include parents of Saint Nicholas choristers Mary Paul and Larry Alexander, Doug Spurlin, plus Bryan McNiff and Kaitlin Bertenshaw, accompanied by Bonnie Bird.  Saint Nicholas Choir will also be featured.  Come hear your favorite arias, duets and choruses by Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, and more, sung by our talented Saint Philip’s musicians.

Saint Nicholas Choir (youth) and Schola Cantorum (adults) will be the resident choir at Ely Cathedral July 15th – 21st, 2019.  They will sing Evensong through the week and also sing the Eucharist and Evensong services on Sunday.  The fundraising goal is to pay all travel expenses for the youth in Saint Nicholas Choir

The Residency is a wonderful and life-changing opportunity for our youth choristers.  During this week-long period, they will be shaped by a medieval cathedral, by the Prayer Book, by the Daily Office, and by singing beloved repertoire in situ.  This experience promises to connect these choristers more deeply to their liturgical work and to the Anglican tradition.

Tickets on are sale for $50 in the Fishpond Garden on Sundays or will be available at the door on the 13th.   Wear your fancy duds and “Glitter and be Gay” at this sparkling event.
